Country Boy, City Girl Chapter 52Saturday morning. And I started my new routine by going out and trying to run 1 mile. He was surprised I was not going to have Holly do it, but he understood that too many knew her as Kaos and it would make them realize that the positions were faked up too soon. “It can actually be played with only 1 stooge, but a good Kaos will make it play smoother.”He said no problem, and told me the check would arrive in a day or so. I called Holly and Peggy and told them the news, and I then moved to the side as Linda called home and told Mandy. I went into the game room and started writing out some more ideas for my presentation. 2 games and a presentation, I had a full schedule ahead of me.Linda came in, closing the door behind her. We gave them the same message and they tried to find 2 people to take over for them (Holly had South America locked up and was pushing north into North America, and Jack had Africa and part of Europe and Asia in his possession). They found 2 people to take their place and we all headed to wait for the girls.“Dude, I thought this would all be D&D and stuff. They have a ton of board games. Risk, Axis and Allies, Diplomacy, and a ton of others as well. Peggy was grinning along with Holly and Linda, and Jack and I talked about the board games I had.When we were done eating Mandy took off like a bat out of hell, and we all chuckled as I reminded her the rule about no guests in the room without Linda or I present, and no going to the rooms of anybody else without Linda, Holly or I being present. And to be back in the room by 11. Peggy decided to wander the game area a bit, and we passed her later in a game of D&D. We spent 2 hours mostly wandering and looking at the games, and I watched a large Roman army and Viking one with over 1,000 led figures on each side doing battle.It was kind of interesting, but when they said this engagement would take about 6 hours I knew it was not the game for me. I was not real interested in a game that took that long for one battle, and could not be packed up and moved if you needed to stop for the night.Linda squeezed my hand and bumped her hip into mine, and taking the hint we headed up to the room. And I should not have been surprised when I heard a squawk when I opened the door. I caught a glimpse of a topless Holly running into her bedroom, and a very red faced Jack sitting on the couch.“Well, I see we’re not the only thing thinking about that” Linda chuckled, and headed in to talk with Holly. But it’s worth it, as it gives us weekends away from everything. We would be having lunch early at 11, and they all said they would be there. And I should not have been surprised when while passing through the miniatures room a little later I saw Mike. Linda and I hung out with him for a bit, and he said he was only down for the day. I kept him tied up as Linda took off for a few, and shortly came back with Peggy. She gave him a big hug, and I reminded her once again that I needed her for the game at 7, and Mike blushed a bit as she took his hand in hers and led him off to explore a bit more.At 11 we all met up and had a good lunch, Mike joining us of course. The girls were all glad to see him, and I asked him if he wanted to crash with us and catch tomorrow also. He said he would call his parents but it should not be a problem, and he and Peggy soon took off again.Once we finished lunch I went to meet Mr. Cummings, and Jack watched as I started to set up for the exhibition. I explained to him that this was a public exhibition of a module I wrote that is being released tonight. And thankfully Linda also noticed, and quickly left the conversation she was in to come up next to me and take my hand in hers. Thankfully the girl got the hint at how possessive Linda was and how I did not flirt back and headed off. Then we went to hit the floor for a bit more, and at around 5 we started looking for everybody else.Jack and Holly were easy to find, they were playing Diplomacy. Finally we found Mandy sitting in the lap of Chris exchanging kisses by the pool area, and then we finally found Peggy pressed into a corner in the empty arcade room, making out with Mike.Once dinner was finished we split up again, and Linda joined Jack and Holly as I reminded the girls they had to be at the test room before 6:30. And the other players were flabbergasted.Right as I passed out the critique sheets Linda came and sat in my lap and gave me a huge kiss, and everybody laughed. The guy she had flirted with laughed the loudest. “I should have known something was up, I thought I recognized her from other conventions!”Finally I gave everything to Mr. Cummings, and he said he was very happy with the test. “That worked out just as we had thought it would, expect it to be on shelves before Christmas Pete. And you are right, having an experienced ‘Kaos’ should be suggested, but in no way required.” And we shook hands and headed off.Whew, finally done for the night! We went to the club and drank sodas and danced. All 8 of us. I saw Peggy out of the corner of my eye during a slow dance as she pulled Mike tight against her and swayed with him, as I saw Mandy and Chris pressed tight together a few feet away from them. Finally at 10:30 I told everybody we were heading up and champagne was available in 30 minutes. And when asked I said that included Chris if he wanted to join us.As we drank the final bottles each guy had a girl in his lap. And there was a little kissing going on until right before midnight, when Chris took off and it was just the 7 of us. I converted the couches into beds, and Mike set up a blanket and pillow on the floor. A short time later we kissed our girlfriends goodnight and everybody drifted off to sleep.It was the last day of the con, and once we finished breakfast we went upstairs to pack. Soon all the luggage was in my truck, except for Peggy’s, which was in Mike’s. And on time I started to give my presentation. And it was a big hit! I could see a lot of people nodding as I described how the Dual Class rule could be used to make characters that often had a short lifespan very survivable. The idea of a Cleric turned fighter as a kind of “Paladin Light” of any alignment really got their interest, as did having a Ranger convert to being a Druid (or the reverse).Of course they really liked the idea that started it all, with a 4th or 5th level fighter becoming a mage. “This is what actually inspired me to write this article, but I can not take all the credit for it. A friend of mine, Mike Kwong actually thought up the idea and I just ran with it. Mike, please stand up for a second so everybody can see your royal nerdiness!” After a few nudges from Peggy he did indeed stand and he got a round of applause.I then explained how he had pulled this on me when he joined a campaign already in progress. The party was weak in magic, but even a level 6 mage can die all too easily with a maximum of only 36 hit points. But by making it a 6th level fighter that had changed classes to a first level mage, he could have a maximum of 84 hit points.“And because the earliest levels move up so fast, about the time the rest of the party is hitting 8th or 9th level, he will be 6th or 7th. And able to use his entire fighter abilities short of armor.”I then went on about modifications as a DM that should be considered, like armor.
